Review: Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! (PlayStation 4)

Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is a wacky simulation game where you manage your very own weapon shop and expand its business across an incredible potato world. Use your potato smiths to forge weapons and sell them to questing heroes.

Pros:

  • Cutesy cartoon graphics.
  • 5.57GB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.

  • Management sim set within a weapon shop.
  • Can name each individual weapon.
  • Tutorial throughout.
  • Clear UI.
  • Whetsapp- Conveys messages of morale, Missions and any current events or effects in play.
  • Smiths- These are your workers, You assign them to stations to craft, Send out on expeditions and manage their morale by using holidays and standby features. Each one can be individually managed and earns EXP and levels up.
  • Colourful fun characters you meet.
  • Save when you want.
  • World map- Unlock new locations as you play. Each location has unique resources to buy, Heroes to sell too and unique resources to find in exploring.
  • Game speed- Pause, Normal, Fast and faster. Easily changed with a button press.
  • Very easy to get into.
  • New options and mechanics are introduced over time.
  • Fame- Kind of like your overall way to level up and unlock rewards. Increasing your Fame will get better Heroes and earn travel passes to unlock new locations on the world map.
  • Boosts- When crafting you can pay a fee to increase one stat on the weapon.
  • Each weapon has a baseline of attributes- Power, Accuracy, Magic etc. Each station in your shop specializes in these and assigning people will determine their efficiency, Reflected in the stats.
  • Random events can occur like an invasion that lowers the current crafted weapons stats or a multiple choice question or some good things like more exp earned in this location for x amount of days.
  • Weather and time are shown and this can have an effect on crafting/selling.
  • A lot of fun to play.
  • Addictive.
  • Play how you want.
  • Starch- Currency in game.
  • Explore- Send smiths out to try and find rare resources including relics.
  • Controls- D-pad a standard but you can turn on/off the ability to use the left stick like a mouse.
  • Selling- You get a list of heroes interested in buying your weapon. You are given the price they will pay and also how much exp they are likely able to earn for you and them. It is a question of progress over cash and vice versa.
  • Contracts- One off timed quests.
  • Unofficial cameo appearances. I say unofficial as they do a Sensible Soccer and change the names of well-known characters and apps.
  • Bills- You need to make enough money to pay your smiths and your rent.
  • Can cancel jobs and builds.
  • The game gives out tips.
  • Shortcut buttons for the menus/actions.
  • Research new weapons by combing relics together.
  • Destroys your time.
  • Lots of timers.
  • You have a pet that you must feed!
  • A lot of fun distractions from the random events to special award ceremonies and new premises as you play the game.
  • Satisfying pop-ups and numbers banging up as they craft.

Cons:

  • Slow burner in terms of unlocks.
  • A lot to take in.
  • Lots of timers.
  • Basic animations.
  • Many many plates to spin.
  • Destroys your time.
  • Looks daunting.
  • Can get tiring/repetitive.
  • A lot of clicking through menus to do basic things.
  • You get left on your own very quickly.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
