Review: Rocket League (Nintendo Switch)

Choose a variety of high-flying vehicles equipped with huge rocket boosters to score amazing aerial goals and pull-off incredible game-changing saves!

Pros:

  • High detailed graphics. It is almost Witchcraft how good it looks.
  • 4.8GB Download size.
  • Banging soundtrack covering many genres from techno to pop.
  • Simple controls. Uses the same control scheme as the other console versions.
  • A tutorial area where you can learn the basics.
  • Advanced training where you can get a look at the advanced plays in the game.
  • Detailed options set: Invert camera, Camera shake on/off, FOV slider, Camera height/angle, and distance. Camera speed and stiffness, V-Sync, Push to talk and ability to mute voice/text chat.
  • Colourblind option.
  • Weather effects on and off. (Can help reduce slowdown)
  • In game text shortcuts for sayings like good job, apologies or great save. You also have the ability to write your own message.
  • Over a dozen cars to unlock.
  • Mutators: Allows you to change everything about the game from ball type (cube, ball, and puck) ball speed,size,goal/time limit and even add an infinite turbo. Mutators really mix it up.
  • Crossplay with Steam and Xbox One users. Can switch off crossplay.
  • Nintendo cars! Mario and Luigi is the same car but depending on your side decides if you are Mario or Luigi. Metroid Samus car can be unlocked from a drop. A nice touch is the Mario jump noise when you jump.
  • Customise your car. Unlock 100s of extras for your car. From antennas to hats and even boost trails. The game has you covered from colors to sponsored items from places like NeoGaf and Reddit.
  • Earn exp at the end of the game and level up. Work your way through the ranks. EXP is earned for doing things like saves, shots, aerial hits etc. Basically, play the game and you are good.
  • Replays of each goal.
  • Boost pads scattered over the arena and respawn. Use it to build your boost gauge.
  • Can rebind controls.
  • 1-4 player split-screen.
  • 2-8 player online.
  • Season mode: Create a team and face off in an offline championship.
  • Exhibition: Pick a stadium and AI difficulty.
  • Fast rewarding gameplay.
  • New arenas will always be FREE.

Cons:

  • The performance takes a big hit when you play split screen with a full 4v4 game or in large open stadiums with a lot of background noise. It can get so bad from slowdown to the ball going almost square due to pixelation.
  • Metroid Samus car has to be earned through a random drop.
  • Common with DLC cars but worth noting, You cannot customise the Nintendo cars in any way.
  • Having other players in the local or local/online keeps trying to get you to input that second players full Nintendo account info. Clicking cancel a few times clears it. I understand the need for online play in a way but not offline.
  • No clan support.
  • Really small text.
  • Doesn’t have cross-play with PlayStation 4.
  • Lag in any way ruins the games. Happens quite a bit in online games at the moment.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
