Review: Iron Crypticle (PlayStation 4)

A mysterious, malevolent force has abducted Cryptonia’s princess – along with the king’s royal golden treasures. Kingsguard to the rescue!

Pros:

  • Glorious 16 bit influenced graphics.
  • 180MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Three difficulties- Easy, Normal and hard.
  • Tutorial- Text/image based.
  • Online leaderboard support with difficulty and friend filters.
  • Top down dungeon crawler twin stick shooter gameplay with RPG elements.
  • Earn EXP and level up.
  • Each floor of the dungeon is a map where you can pick your route by what door you exit from in a room.
  • Room locations randomise so its never the same route twice.
  • Enemies spawn into the room and there are many types from stationary ones to fast movers and ones that can stun you.
  • Combo counter.
  • Loot em up! Enemies and chests drop loot like gear, Health and coins.
  • Proper retro feel to it all but with modern mechanics.
  • Lush arcade inspired mini games located within an arcade cabinet.
  • Shop to buy loot.
  • Simple controls.
  • 4 Player local co op support with drop in out.
  • Roguelike but you can permanently unlock items for future playthroughs.
  • Big boss fights turning the game into a bullet hell at times.
  • Dark levels and you can only see parts of the level.
  • Solid gameplay.
  • Tons of replay-ability.
  • Cool chiptune soundtrack.
  • Full level up system in play.

Cons:

  • Screen can get very busy making it hard to see who is who.
  • Slow starter in terms of enemy spawn and fire rate.
  • No online multiplayer.
