Review: Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku! (PlayStation 4)

Set in Japan’s Sengoku Era, you find yourself in the mysterious land of Arcanus Cella. Hack, slash, and bash your way through trap-filled, monster-infested dungeons based on actual locations from feudal Japan.

Pros:

  • Chunky pixel graphics.
  • 540.8MB Download size.
  • Opening and ongoing tutorial.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Retro or modern soundtrack.
  • In depth character creator- Pick a job which defines your stats, type of dialogue like imbecile or nervous. Character appearance and colour.
  • Save when you like.
  • Hack and slash dungeon crawler with RPG elements.
  • Magic circle-Acts as a formation of your team which placement determines stats and buffs. You only control one character in game but the magic circle has you put team members in. You can add stones and artifacts to further manipulate the buffs and stats.
  • Each dungeon has info like number of times cleared, Fastest time cleared and the time required to beat for a star finish.
  • Main hub-Unlock new places like shops, Blacksmith, Bth house and more.
  • Fast travel. You can quickly jump between locations instantly through the menu.
  • Create additional characters and recruit them to your team.
  • Create system-Aside from characters you can create your own music, Face creator and more that unlock as you play.
  • Dungeons are varied and have multiple themes. You have to hit switches, Beat monsters to unlock doors and find chests.
  • Big boss battles.
  • EX Dungeons- Harder dungeons with better loot.
  • Surprisingly easy to get into and a lot of fun.
  • You can ignore a lot of the mechanics and still get a lot from it.
  • Can replay levels.
  • Online leaderboards.
  • Network play-Co op dungeons and also a PVP mode.
  • 10 chapters for the story with 5 levels within each and then an additional 10 EX chapters.
  • Blacksmith-Add buffs to weapons, You use points which are earned by killing monsters with that weapon.
  • Very addictive.
  • Bite sized levels for quick games.
  • Quests-Optional side quests that can actually change level/monster design in order to do the quests for bonus loot.
  • So much to do.
  • Ran Geons- Randomly generated dungeons with each level having multiple doors. Each door will then randomly change the difficulty of monsters, Drop rate and if you jump any levels ahead. Its a 99 floored dungeon.
  • Tri Geons-Basically the same as Ran Geons but harder and go down a connected aesthetic.

Cons:

  • Music can get a bit much especially the retro type.
  • A lot to take in.
  • Clunky UI.
  • Pick ups pop up in the centre of the screen, Obstructing your view.
  • A lot of item management.
  • A lot of grinding is needed to max weapons and level up.
  • No online private/send invites option.
  • Graphics just look like a blown up Vita display.
  • Combat takes a bit of getting used to.
  • Learning about the magic circle and all the elements within it is a lot to process.
